1967: Men Carrying Purses and Wearing Knee Socks with Shorts
It's 1967. You're looking at the Sears Catalog contemplating those Oakbrook Polished Cottons. Unfortunately, what you yearn for are the socks and the Man Purse or "Murse" that is depicted in the illustration. What quickens your decent into the abyss of fashion depression is that neither the socks nor the murse get a mention in the catalog.
You vow to find the socks and the Man Purse. And when they are tracked down, and you can buy them... you're going to wear just the socks and carry the murse.
So there.

** Slack Power advertisement from 1969 ** Copies of this particular vintage ad for Anti-establishment Post Grad Slacks by is h.i.s are all over the internet. This groovy retro ad photo has been manipulated by photoshop more times that we can count - why? Because it clearly an effective and stand out ad!
Yes Sir. We've had these exact pants in our Mens Vintage Clothing Store over the years, and we've had many items from the h.i.s brand mens clothing line.
Discover our selection of Men's Vintage Pants - we've got plenty of NEVER WORN genuine vintage pants in stock for men in our online shop at DressThatMan.com!

Fashion Flashback: 1967 Mens Boxer Shorts
Back in 1967, you could buy boxers shorts out of the Sears catalog that were guaranteed for one full year. This leaves us wondering how many guys might have actually carried their undies back to the store for a refund. If any did.
Most of all, the photo collage really made us chuckle. Those boxers are pulled up and over their belly buttons. And, that coffee cup the big guy is holding looks like he may have wrestled it from the two smaller men hanging out at his left hip.
We observed a moment of silence in reverence to a world without Photoshop... and vowed to toss out our threadbare underwear.

Mens Vintage Clothing: Pants of the 70's
![]() |
| Men's Vintage Clothing - Sears 1975 Catalog |
Back in 1975, polyester was KING of the fabrics when it came to men's fashion. Most often worn tight and close to the body, polyester had fair amount of stretch which allowed men to move freely yet keep that body hugging, more fitted look.
Sears was one of the department stores that was well known for producing mens fashion for the masses, and at DressThatMan.com we have sold many items from Sears over the years from the 1970's. Of course, these men's 70's fashion pieces are now items are which are referred to as men's vintage clothing - desirable today for costumers for use in film and stage, celebrities of all types, musicians, sports figures, and... top shelf men who simply love keeping it REAL in genuine vintage.
As illustrated in the photo above, men's doubleknit polyester plaid pants were a common sight on men and in their closets. We've got loads of Men's Vintage Polyester Pants online at DressThatMan.com - and many have never been worn.
Adding some genuine mens vintage clothing to your wardrobe is a great way to enhance your style and stand out in the crowd. 70's fashion can be damn funny... and fun to wear!

Men's Fashion In the 70's
Back in 1975, men in polyester leisure suits were a common sight across the American landscape. As illustrated in the Sears catalog photo above, some guys chose to wear bright color slacks with their plaid leisure suit jacket. Also note the first guy is wearing a turtle neck shirt, the second is wearing a pull over sports shirt and the third is wearing a traditional button down with a tie. And if you observe closely - look at how high waisted those pants are!
There was no internet, or Google back in 1975. Instead, people waited to get their hands on the latest big department store catalogs. Prior to surfing the web, people flipped the pages of 5 pound seasonal catalogs. And, in the condition of which we have seen some of these catalogs - there was a LOT of page flipping going on, man!
For the modern day man, if you're web surfing on an iPad or any touch screen computer you can simulate that page flipping action at DressThatMan.com - we've got plenty of original men's vintage clothes from the 70's for you to check out.

Men's Vintage Fashion: 1979 Hot Pants
Women remember when hot pants and short shorts were all the rage back in the 1970's - but, who is clamoring for this 70's booty short look to come back in men's fashion? Tennis anyone!?
With this treacherous heatwave we've been having across the nation DressThatMan.com can safely assume there must be a fraction of men across the USA wearing this look, although the majority of them are most likely confined to their homes...

Mens 60's Fashion: Man Gang 1967
Striking a rather unnatural pose for a 1967 Penneys Catalog, this retro man gang look like they could blend right into a fall color scheme. Over the years, we've had many men's vintage clothing items from JC Penney on the DressThatMan.com website and the color scheme shown above was a popular one in the mid to late 1960's.
Guys posing like this on the sidewalk are going to get some attention no matter what they are wearing!
We double dare ya, man.

Men's Vintage: Broomsticks Slacks
Check out this advertisement from 1971 for Broomsticks Men's Slacks. Broomsticks Slacks were a product of Glen Oaks in New York City. This particular men's fashion season featured these doubleknit slacks in 100% Celanese Fortrel polyester fabric.
According to their advertising at the time, "They stand up to all the action - whatever that might be." In 1971, these pants sold for 18 to 25 bucks a pair. While those prices might not seem like much today, according to the Government's Inflation Calculator - those $18.00 pants back in 1971 are equal to spending $102.14 today. And, the $25.00 pants are equal to $141.86!
Note the slightly higher hemline and how snug the pants were to a man's body compared to modern day fashion. DressThatMan has carried these vintage pants from time to time, and no doubt - it's very possible we'll have some to offer in the future in the store. Providing we can grab some pants in excellent or unworn vintage condition.
The one thing these pants wouldn't stand up to is getting burned with cigarettes (or other things)... and since smoking was something people did a lot back then don't be surprised if you find a pair with some burns on 'em.
Not from us. We're just sayin'.

1970's Men's Disco Pants
Deadstock Vintage (original clothing specific to a bygone era that has never been worn) is an indulgence of luxury and a pleasure to wear for the creative and vibrant man. Your mere presence says it all in whatever you do. You know that impression is everything, so why show up at the retro themed event wearing a cheesy costume that, chances are good, some other guy will be wearing. No way man. You want the REAL THING. Real clothes that men wore in the 1970's.
Some men who crave Deadstock Vintage Clothing, simply cannot bear the thought of wearing clothing that was previously worn by another man. Doesn't matter if it was dry cleaned or freshly laundered - the thought creeps some of you out. We know, because we've heard it repeatedly, and we truly appreciate your honesty.
Which leads us to another familiar question we get...
How can I find my pant size on your site?
First thing you need to do is to actually measure a pair of pants you own that fit (dress pants - not jeans). Don't measure your body and don't go by what tag size you think or know you wear. We measure everything on the site flat on a table so you can get the best possible fit. Modern day sizing tags don't generally measure up as they are tagged. See more about how we measure here.
Once you have the waist and inseam measurement, you can put it in the search box on the DressThatMan.com website like this example: "34x32" and hit the enter key.
When you initiate the search with the measured size, it will pull up all of the available pants in that size - including pants that can be altered in the inseam length to that specific size.
Of course you can always peruse our pant catalog by general sizing: SMALL (waist 32" and under) - Medium (waist 33" - 35") - Large (waist 36" - 38") and XL (waist 39" and UP)
We'll be busy adding more deadstock vintage mens clothing over the summer, including men's 1970's disco pants in solid colors. Keep an eye on our site - we've got loads of great merchandise we're prepping for you.

1970's White Bell Bottom Pants

How about a rare pair of genuine Men's Vintage White Bell Bottom Pants? The REAL THING from the 1970's. Unworn for decades and complete with their original tags, they remain hopeful they will at last find a man of their very own.
A bold man who isn't afraid to get his groove going on out on the dance floor. The man these pants are in search of can shake his moneymaker so hard that the loose change comes flying out of his pockets without additional assistance. He's the Disco King at the party!
Grab any wild print disco shirt and get down like guys in the 1970's did - in authentic vintage clothing from DressThatMan.com.

Jack... the first man brave enough to send in a photo for the gallery, otherwise known as DressThatMan's Funky Fashion Hall of Fame. The shop crew was recently reminiscing over the excitement at receiving the photograph above of you wearing the wild print 1970's disco shirt back in 2004.
Thanks for the the memories, man!

Original 70's Polyester Leisure Suits
Here's a genuine 1970's super groovy RUST color polyester leisure suit made by Levi's. For the action man on the dance floor, this suit will move and groove with you all night long. Polyester doesn't wrinkle easily, and it has a natural stretch to it - so you won't feel constrained showing off the manliest of maneuvers.
This suit is fully machine washable, too. Labeled an XL, the jacket measures up as a 44 and the flared pants measure in at 39x32. Western influenced with the pearly snaps. A standout with the contrasting top stitching on the jacket and the pants.
Get all the details on this vintage disco era suit here. Come on cowboy... lets get it ON!

Men's Pants In 1967
Dig the depiction of Men's pants in the 60's in the photo above. 1967 specifically. From the Penneys Fall and Winter catalog. Belt widths ranged from medium to wide, and some pants were minus the belt loops all together. Cuffed leg hems and uncuffed. All with tapered legs, and... as you can see, pants were worn much shorter back in the 1960's. Gotta show off a bit of sock and those shoes, man.
If you're a guy into wearing uber expensive modern day shoes, you could be hoping for this "show off your shoes" style to make a comeback. While others may be having horrible flashbacks to Family Matters Steve Urkel character.
If you're a guy into wearing uber expensive modern day shoes, you could be hoping for this "show off your shoes" style to make a comeback. While others may be having horrible flashbacks to Family Matters Steve Urkel character.
If this style ever does come back full circle, we might all have to be reassessing what socks we are wearing. Those bagankle (baggy ankle) socks will be the first to go - and not simply the stretched out at the ankle socks, but the ones that slowly make their way south throughout the day and end up looking like two homeless Shar Pei puppies. Which on a side note, might make some cool sock puppets. At least you could have a little bit of fun with them before adding to the sudden influx of socks overflowing the landfills.
Yes Sir. Socks don't get the respect they deserve nowadays. They are kept mostly hidden, in the dark, far away and underneath things. The ones we love are prone to lose a twin, mysteriously disappearing in the apparently hungry washer and/or dryer. Wanted posters don't help. Neither do rewards. Sometimes we keep the solo sock hoping for a reunion and wait for years before we finally throw the urchins out.

Yet, every now and then the stars align in the universe and a sock comes back. "So Far Away" by Carole King stops incessantly playing over and over in your head, replaced by "Reunited" by Peaches and Herb.
Go ahead. Be proud. Show off your socks.

Sensationally Senseless Fashion
Here are some photos above taken from a Penneys catalog circa 1967. Evidently, it was incredibly popular to stand out in the crowd by wearing adult outfits that were akin to being dressed like 2 year old twins. That's right, no need to wonder who is with who at that shindig when you are dressed in matching clothes. Yes, there is no better way to get people to back off when you don't have to audibly say he or she is mine. It's clear. We get it. Nice to meet you two.
While we find this wildly amusing today, it's a fashion statement we would be quite surprised (and horrified) to ever see a successful revival of.

Men's Designer 1970's Vintage Disco Shirts
Some original 1970's Men's disco shirts are far more special than others, and the shirt shown in the photo above is certainly one of them. It was mighty tough getting a photo of this rare 70's shirt because the camera flash bounced off the fabric giving the black background on it a semi-transparent appearance when it actually is jet black.
It didn't last long once we put it up on the site here, but it is one shirt we'll always remember.
